Formula One is the highest class of international racing and consists of the best racing drivers across the world. Every year, a new title fight begins as the top 22 racers face the grid to test their cars and skills for the chance at the World Championship. This is a sport built on legends, some of which are still on the grid this year. Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, holding 4 and 7 championships respectively, are some of the most dominant names in F1 history. Star power has helped to shape the new age of Formula One with new advancements and technology rolling out over recent years. Individual drivers are often more important to fans than are teams, especially with the rise of social media and increase in parasocial relationships. This proves useful for long-term athlete branding and the building of global fanbases for driver personalities.
For the longest time, Verstappen and Hamilton dominated the championship. From 2017-2024, Hamilton and Verstappen were the only championship winners. This changed with the 2025 championship winner Lando Norris. This was a major deal to long term fans because it almost seemed to mark a new era with the transition in who was now a part of title fights. However, this would not have nearly as huge of an impact as the crowning of 2026 title winner, Kimi Antonelli.
As of Sunday, Nov. 1, 2026, Kimi Antonelli was announced as the newest Formula One World Champion. This came after a tough rookie season marked by underestimation and doubt. In 2025, Antonelli began his rookie season at only 18 years old while still completing secondary school. He was brought in by Mercedes Principal, Toto Wolff, to replace Lewis Hamilton’s seat after his transition to Ferrari. Then came the doubters who believed there was no possible way an 18-year-old boy with very limited driving experience could be a good choice to replace Hamilton. His rookie year was undoubtedly shaky, but he showed great potential.

Kimi Antonelli has not been shy of his past as a Formula One fan. There are countless pictures of him visiting F1 drivers like Verstappen, Hamilton, and much more. He openly shares how much he looks up to and aspires to be like Formula One legend Ayrton Senna. Formula racing is not only a job or sport to him, it is a childhood dream and joy he now lives out. He is the living embodiment of the journey of fan to champion.
Antonelli is not the only young driver on the grid. Gen Z actually dominates the grid this year, with newer drivers like Arvid Lindblad (20), Oliver Bearman (21), Gabriel Bortoleto (22), Isack Hadjar (22), and Kimi Antonelli (20). There are so many emerging talents among the new generation of drivers. Bringing in new drivers from younger generations creates compelling rivalries, generates new storylines, and keeps fans on their toes for what may come next. However, the continuation of introducing young talent to compete with older, generational talents can create frustrations. Will Hamilton and Verstappen fans embrace new talent like Antonelli? Does new, young talent alienate older fans? These kinds of transitions in a sport can make traditional watchers feel frustrated to see their long-term favorites pushed to the side or out-competed. However, Verstappen and Hamilton have shown outstanding support of Antonelli and verbally express their pride in him. Their praise helps frame the narrative as a passing of the torch rather than battle for the throne.
Really it comes down to the numbers. Formula One is seeing a major movement of younger audiences into the sport. With shows like Drive to Survive, viewership in the United States is increasing, which includes the younger population. With the rise of social media advertising from Formula One teams and drivers, there is a higher relatability and visibility for younger fans. Having younger drivers dominate the sport helps drive those young fans in using fresh personality and story. If F1 is able to lock in these young fans, they are able to build more life-long fans that will follow the sport for the rest of their lives. Having a 20-year-old World Champion is creating major engagement for Formula One and creates the potential for major long-term marketing possibilities. This is also a great time to create campaigns aligning with the future of the sport. Overall, the championship crowning of a young driver like Kimi Antonelli is a major win for Formula One and their potential for media opportunities and fan engagement.
